6:30 A.M.

Doves are cooing at the window.  Ami looks out...

"Good Morning!"

Ami-chan no hatsukoi
"Amy's First Love"

"I'm Ami Mizuno.  Born on September 10th, a Virgo, blood type A."

My hobbies are reading and chess.  Every morning I get to school 40 minutes early to read...

My favourite food is sandwiches because I can eat them while I'm reading.

My favourite sport is swimming.  My favourite colour is blue.  My favourite subject is math.

But my least favourite thing is...

"a love letter...?!"

" Well, it sure is a problem I'd like
to have, getting a love letter," said Mako.
"No doubt," agreed Usagi.
"It's not like I've received a lot or anything," stammered Ami, "but...
...it's just that I get this horrible reaction to them!"
"Ami, "admonished Minako, "you know what they say: Life's short and love's a battle."
Everyone slumped.
"Was that wrong?" asked Minako.
"I think the correct saying is: Life's short, love while you can." moaned Artemis.
"I guess that's another way of putting it..." said Minako.

"You know," laughed Ami, "I think there's only one thing we should be passionately doing in our last year of junior high school, and that is..."

Everyone: " Studying, right?"

Ami pulled out her glasses and put them on. "That's right!  Right now, in my dictionary,
there's no such word as love!"

The wind whistled.

"She's scary..." quipped Chibi-Usa.

"Is there... something wrong?" ventured Mako.

"Take a look at this." Ami handed Mako a book, "Look on page 42."
"Page 42..."
"It's the rankings for the national practice exams," explained Ami.
Mako read out loud, "First place: Mercury,
100% in all five subjects!?"
"That means a perfect score on every exam!" exclaimed Usagi.
"Mercury... that's you, right Ami?" asked Chibi-Usa.
"That's right," replied Ami, "You send the results in under a pseudonym and they rank you accordingly.  The problem is that person!"
" There's another perfect score!" exclaimed Rei, "Mercurius."
  "Mercurius?" wondered Minako.

"That's "Mercury" in Latin," explained Artemis.

Ami continued, " Lately that person has been keeping first alongside me in every exam... they may be challenging me.
Perhaps it's a new type of enemy!"

Everyone looked at Ami.

"Ami, I think you're overanalyzing things!"

However, at school the next day, Ami couldn't stop thinking about it.  "I wonder what kind of person this Mercurius is..."
Amy walked down the hall and saw some posters for tutorial seminars.
"That's it!" thought Ami, "If I take more exams, and go to more tutorial seminars, maybe I'll meet this Mercurius!"  Ami was pumped.
"I've never felt so passionate before... it's so thrilling to have a rival!"
Ami shouted out loud "All right then, I won't back down from this either!"

All the other students were staring at Ami.

Ami arrived for study group with a humongous stack of textbooks!

"Ami, I think maybe you're overdoing it," ventured Luna.

"Oh!" cried Ami as she checked the newspaper, "We're tied for first again!  This person is not just anybody to be placing first every time!"

"Look who's talking," commented Rei.

Ami's eyes softened suddenly.  "But what is this person like, do you think?  I do wish I could meet him..."

"She's crazy..." sighed Mako.

"Ami, it almost seems like you're in love or something," remarked Minako.

"No, no," protested Ami, "He's a rival!"

"How do you know it's a he?" said Rei.

"The name Mercurius doesn't reveal anything like that..." added Usagi, teasingly.

" Well, yes.  I guess...," admitted Ami.

" So Ami, what do you look for in a man anyway?" asked Minako.

"Yeah, tell us!" encouraged Mako.
"What's he like?" asked Chibi-Usa enthusiastically.

"What I look for?" repeated Ami, "Well, he's..."

Others: "He's...?"

"Like Einstein" said Ami.

"Who-?" said Usagi.

The next day the girls sat at the dessert parlour, discussing Ami's situation.

" I've never seen Ami like that," said Rei.

" The way her eyes sparkled!" Mako imitated Ami.

" Acting so... feminine!" wailed Usagi.

" Perhaps this is..." wondered Chibi-Usa.

" Ami's first love?" said everyone.

Minako jumped up.  "All right! Minako, the goddess of love will help her out!"

"It's no skin off my neck!"

" Cut that out...!" wailed Artemis.

"Anyway, we've got to help her find out who this Mercurius is!" continued Minako.

"But how do we do that?" asked Chibi-Usa.

  "Umino!"

Umino looked scared.

"Umino, you're dependable when it comes to stuff like this!" stated Usagi, "Do you know anything about Mercurius, the exam ace?"

"Well, yes...," replied Umino, "he's my friend."

"Lucky!" shouted a delighted Usagi.

Meanwhile, Ami was hitting the tutorial seminars.

"Watch out Mercurius," Ami said to herself, "I can study and study and study..."

"...and rest a bit..."

"and study and study and study some more...!"

"...and rest... "

Ami woke up.  "Oh my! It's the first day, and I'm falling asleep in class."  Ami was overworked and had made herself sick.

Red glowing eyes peered in the window.

"I can feel it... an unspeakably lewd aura..." said the monster.  "Oh... there she is, that girl's in love..."

It was the Terakoya, a demon that feeds on the desires of others!

"Mercurius..." mumbled a sleepy Ami.

"She's filled with lust, thinking only
about a man... She's easy prey for me," boasted the Terakoya.  "I've been in this business for over a hundred years. Her desire will be mine!"

The Terakoya perched invisibly on top of Ami.

"My head hurts...," sighed Ami as she plodded home, "maybe I'm getting sick..."

Meanwhile, Umino led Usagi, Mako, Minako and Rei to a tutorial school.  Usagi thought it looked like a dump but Umino assured them that it was a very old and reputable school.  A boy came out of the building.

"Oh!  Mercurius!" called out Umino.

"Hey Professor Googly-Glasses!" replied the boy.

"Professor Googly-Glasses is my pseudonym," explained Umino.

The girls stared.

"What's the matter?" wondered Umino.

Ami lay in bed at home, sick.  The Terakoya was delighted.

"My body won't move..." moaned Ami, "Mercurius, are you doing this to me?"

"She's being haunted by her desires..." gloated the Terakoya, "she must be ready for my final act."

The Terakoya launched her first special attack.  "The start of all desires: The Love Letter Attack!  No one is unaffected by the anticipated desires sealed within!"

"This reaction I'm getting..."  Ami broke out in an allergic rash.

"L... L... Love letters?!!"

"That's not all..." laughed the Terakoya.  Bubbles started coming out of Ami's head.

"Oh, no!" cried Ami, "All those equations I memorized!  They're leaving my brain!  Wait!  Come back!"

"All your knowledge will flee your mind,
and you'll become a slave to your desires." gloated Terakoya.

"Who... are you?"  Ami struggled to be free of the love letters.

"I can't see... My mind's all cloudy and I can't focus..."

Usagi, Mamoru and Chibi-Usa were in the hallway in Ami's building.

"Should I tell her about Mercurius' identity?" wondered Usagi.

"No!"  The three of them heard Ami's voice.

Usagi rushed into Ami's apartment.  "Ami!"

"Wahh!" Usagi fell into a strange void, but grabbed the doorstep just in time.

"Who's that?" demanded the Terakoya.

"That's what we'd like to know!" shouted Chibi-Usa.

"Me?" replied the Terakoya coyly,  "I am..."

"You're Mercurius!" shouted Ami!

The Terakoya was confused.  "No, I am..."

"It's all your doing!" interrupted Ami, "My headache, my drowsiness... you play a dirty game!"

"Excuse me," said the Terakoya, "but I'm not..."

"I won't back down!" shouted Ami.

"Mercury crystal power! Make up!"

"Exam results + seminars + stress (sabotage/ rival) = Enemy!" declared Sailor Mercury.  "You wanted to be number one at all costs!  It can't be forgiven!"

"I am the Sailor Soldier of love and exams,
Sailor Mercury!  Stick your head in some cold water and think about what you've done!"

Usagi tried to interrupt.  "I'm telling you, she's not Mercurius!"

Sailor Mercury continued undeterred.  "I knew you were my rival, but I didn't think you'd get inside my head!"

"Help me!" wailed Usagi, still clinging to the doorstep.

"It's the end of this never-ending battle for first place!" declared Mercury.

"But I'm not..." wailed the Terakoya.

"This is my equation for victory!"

"Mercury Aqua Mirage!"

  The room returned to normal.

"I feel so much better!" announced Sailor Mercury.  She passed out on her bed.

Chibi-Usa ran in.  "Ami, are you all right?"

"Ami!" called Mamoru.

"But I sure would liked to have seen him," mumbled Ami.

The next day, the girls (without Ami) met at the dessert parlour.

"Rival = Enemy, hey..." quoted Minako, "I hope my grades never get that good."

"I don't think you have anything to worry about," snipped Artemis.  Mina started to beat up Artemis.

"Anyway, we shouldn't say anything about Mercurius in front of Ami," instructed Usagi.

"Then, you saw him?" Ami suddenly appeared!

"What was he like?" asked Ami.

"Uhh... Kind of like this guy here," said Minako, pointing to a handsome pop singer in her teen idol magazine.

Ami looked at the magazine.  "That's what I imagined him to look like," exclaimed Ami, "a young Einstein!"

"A little shallow, don't you think?" groaned Minako.

"If she finds out he looked exactly Umino..." Usagi shuddered at the thought.
"But why use the name Mercurius?" wondered Makoto.
Usagi explained, "His name is Suri Curume, kind of like Mercurius backwards."
[This joke works better when you write his name using the Japanese alphabet.]

Later, the girls were walking up the long steps to Rei's house.
"What?!" exclaimed Ami.
"What's wrong?" asked Mako.
"I destroyed Mercurius, but he's still in the rankings!" fumed Ami.
"Well, Ami..." ventured Usagi.

Ami looked up.  "Don't worry everybody.  Just leave him to me!!"

Ami-chan no Hatsukoi! -- The End!
